HASNA PRESENTS TURKISH MOVIE SHOWING AT AVALON THEATER IN WASHINGTON, DC ON FEBRUARY 28, 2013

HasNa presents Turkey’s best received film of 2011: WPR - Dedemin Insanlari (Movie)showing at the Avalon Theater in Washington, DC at 8pm on Feb. 28th.  Directed by Çağan Irmak, My Grandfather’s People is loosely inspired by Irmak’s childhood growing up in the late 1970s and early ’80.  Throughout the film the plot relives family memories of the 1923 population exchange agreement between Turkey and Greece and the Treaty of Lausanne, which led to the emigration of approximately 2 million Turks from Greece.

Though the Treaty of Lausanne was in fact a peace treaty that gave way to today’s Republic of Turkey, the treaty is a significant example of how mandated population exchange policy can negatively effect the human condition.  Tensions between Turkey and Greece have persisted since Greek independence in 1821, however, despite being victims of economic hardship and conflicts in neighboring countries, relations between the two countries have recently improved.  My Grandfather’s People tells the tale of one family’s experience through this rich and captivating history.

Proceeds of ticket sales will go towards HasNa’s conflict resolution efforts and support future programs in the areas of agriculture, community development, women in business, and education in Turkey, Armenia, and Cyprus.  To buy or reserve tickets visit our website: hasna.org or send a check to our office (address found on website).
